Thank you for your question. A General Obligation, or GO, Bond is a financing tool used by local governments to pay for major public capital projects. These projects may include schools, public buildings, infrastructure, parks, libraries, and other long-term community assets. Cabarrus County is considering a 2026 school bond referendum to help fund school construction, renovations, and facility improvements. If voters approve the bond referendum on their ballots this November, Cabarrus County can borrow funds at a favorable interest rate and repay the debt over time. The county would issue school bonds totaling $340million.
The bond referendum comes as Cabarrus County continues to manage long-term school facility needs, including aging buildings, major renovation needs, HVAC and infrastructure replacement, and capacity needs in growing areas. While student growth has slowed compared with previous decades, the district continues to face significant renovation and life-cycle replacement needs across existing schools.
The proposed 2026 school bond includes funding for one school replacement, design work on a new southern high school, and major maintenance projects at schools across Cabarrus County. For Cabarrus County Schools, those proposed projects include:
- New Construction: On-site replacement of Central Cabarrus High School; Southern high school conceptual design
- HVAC & Plumbing: Winecoff Elementary, Rocky River Elementary, Bethel Elementary and Mount Pleasant Elementary
- Roof Replacement: A.T. Allen Elementary, C.C. Griffin Middle, Patriots Elementary, Harold E. Winkler Middle and J.N. Fries Middle
- Parking Improvements: W.M. Irvin Elementary, Harris Road Middle, J.N. Fries Middle, Weddington Hills Elementary and W.R. Odell Primary
Both Cabarrus County government and Cabarrus County Schools have committed to keeping the public up-to-date on bond-funded projects and expenditures should the referendum be approved on the November 3rd general election ballot.
